Warming Winter Snacks for Kids

ALISON TONSMEIRE / January 22, 2018

Children can work up quite an appetite playing in the snow and enjoying all that winter has to offer. After an exciting adventure outside, children and adults may need a snack to feel reenergized. Here are some warming winter snack suggestions aimed to be satisfying and also full of important nutrients.

Homemade hot chocolate. Mix ½ tablespoon cocoa powder with 1 tablespoon sugar and a tablespoon of water. Stir into a paste and then add 1 cup
warm milk and ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract. Stir and enjoy.
Baked bananas. Unpeel a banana, and cut several slits. Fill the slits with raisins or nut butter. You can also sprinkle cocoa powder and sugar
or cinnamon sugar over the top. Then, wrap the banana in foil. Bake until warm. Allow it to cool slightly before eating.
Oatmeal. Make with milk for added calcium. You can add fresh or dried fruit, chocolate chips, honey, nuts or nut butter to make it exciting.
Garnish with cinnamon and brown sugar.
Air popped popcorn. It’s a whole grain! You can get creative with toppings. Consider olive oil and salt, peanut butter, soy nut butter, cinnamon
sugar or parmesan cheese.
Whole wheat English muffin or mini bagel pizzas. A classic favorite. Try dressing up the snack with colorful vegetables such as red peppers
or broccoli.
Sit down with your child and take a moment together to relax and enjoy the moment.
Note: Foods such as peanut butter and popcorn can be choking hazards for children under 4. Exercise your best judgment when preparing snacks.
